Ontario Window and Door Rebates
Ontario homeowners may qualify for rebates when eligible windows, entry doors, sliding doors or skylights are replaced through the Home Renovation Savings Program. This guide explains the current rebate, minimum opening requirements and steps that must be completed before installation.
How Much Is the Ontario Window and Door Rebate?
The assessment-based Home Renovation Savings Program currently lists a rebate of $100 for each eligible rough opening upgraded with qualifying windows, entry doors, sliding doors or skylights. Final eligibility and payment are determined by the program administrator.
For Each Eligible Rough Opening
The minimum for this upgrade category is at least three qualifying window rough openings or one qualifying entry door, sliding door or skylight rough opening.
Windows and doors form one upgrade category
The assessment-based program currently requires at least two qualifying energy-upgrade categories. Replacing windows and doors together still counts as one category, so another eligible upgrade must also be completed.
The Main Eligibility Requirements
Purchasing an energy-efficient product does not automatically create rebate eligibility. The home, products, project size and program process must all meet the current requirements.
- You must own an eligible Ontario home participating through the applicable program stream.
- A qualifying initial home energy assessment must be completed before work begins.
- At least two eligible energy-upgrade categories must be successfully completed.
- The window and door project must meet the applicable minimum number of rough openings.
- The complete installed products must be qualifying ENERGY STAR certified models.
- A follow-up assessment and required documentation must be completed after the improvements.
What Does “Per Rough Opening” Mean?
A rough opening is the framed opening in the wall that receives the complete window or door assembly. It is not always the same as the number of panes, operating sections or individual units visible within that opening.
Window Opening
One casement, slider, hung or fixed window installed within one framed wall opening is generally one rough opening.
Combination Window
Several joined window units fitted inside one continuous wall opening may still be treated as one rough opening.
Door Opening
A qualifying entry door or sliding patio door installed as a complete assembly within its framed opening may satisfy the door-opening minimum.
These examples provide general guidance. Confirm the eligible opening count and product requirements with the program administrator or registered energy advisor.
Complete the Program Steps in the Right Order
GNHE does not administer the rebate. Homeowners remain responsible for registering, arranging assessments, confirming product eligibility and supplying the required documentation.
Confirm Your Home Is Eligible
Review the official requirements and contact an approved service organization before beginning renovations.
Complete the Initial Assessment
A registered energy advisor assesses the home before any window, door or other qualifying upgrade work begins.
Select at Least Two Upgrade Categories
Windows, entry doors, sliding doors and skylights collectively form one category. At least one additional eligible category is required.
Confirm the Products Qualify
Verify that each complete window or door model satisfies the current ENERGY STAR and program requirements before it is ordered.
Complete the Installation
Have the approved products installed and retain the invoices, product details and labels required for verification.
Complete the Follow-Up Assessment
The registered energy advisor completes the final assessment and submits the required program documentation.

Can I receive the rebate for windows and doors alone?

What is the minimum window or door project?
The current minimum is three qualifying window rough openings or one qualifying entry door, sliding door or skylight rough opening.
Do three window units always equal three rough openings?
No. Several window units may be joined within one structural opening. Eligibility is based on rough openings rather than the number of panes, sashes or individual manufactured units.
Can the work begin before the home energy assessment?
The initial assessment must be completed before work begins through this program stream. Starting too early could affect eligibility.
Does GNHE apply for the rebate?
No. GNHE can provide product and installation information, but the homeowner is responsible for program registration, assessments, eligibility confirmation and documentation.
Could the rebate amount or rules change?
Yes. Funding, amounts, deadlines and eligibility requirements can change. Review the official program information before ordering products or beginning work.
